Begin with the layer beneath the coat
A camel wrap coat with broad lapels changes shape through its belt. First put on the clothes you actually intend to wear underneath. A thin shirt and a thicker jumper need different amounts of room even if the coat can close over both. Overlap the front panels without pulling them hard, then thread the belt through its intended loops. Check whether that height feels comfortable. The belt does not have to trace your natural waist exactly if a slightly looser position works better for the way you wear the coat.
Choose a simple knot with some room
Cross one belt end over the other and tighten the first knot only enough to keep the coat securely closed. Add a second loose knot if useful instead of forcing a large bow from ends that are too short. Avoid leaving the ends so long that they interfere with walking or using steps. Sit down afterwards and breathe normally. If the belt presses, loosen it slightly. A neatly arranged wrap front is not very useful if you immediately have to open it whenever you sit in order to feel comfortable.
Prepare for wearing it open
If you want to wear the coat open later, you can loosely tie the belt behind you if that does not interfere with sitting. Another option is securing the ends in suitable pockets where their construction allows it. Do not let them trail unnoticed towards the ground. A simple dark jumper beneath the camel shade provides a clear alternative to the fastened wrap front. When hanging the coat up, keep its belt with it. That makes it easy to find next time without losing the coat’s useful fastening option.
